Feminist Porn Award Nominations 2012

Feminist porn pioneer Annie Sprinkle once said: “The answer to bad porn is not no porn, but to try to make better porn!” And to this I would add: not necessarily “better” porn, but specifically, “MORE” porn.

Because “better” is in the eye of the beholder, and given that all adults involved are legal and consenting, there’s not really such a thing as “bad” pornography in an ethical, sex-positive culture. Better might just mean different — it might mean a more diverse selection that can give us new choices and show us things not found in most porn. That’s why I like MORE, because pornography’s danger is when it paints a limiting view on who gets to have sex and who likes what. When so many of us don’t have access to sex education or examples of sexual expression, the “one-porn-fits-all” approach creates and maintains stereotypes and even implies what is “normal” — and I think that is really what the heart of the issue is.

2010 Feminist Porn Awards. Photo: Lana Paiement

The Feminist Porn Awards, ingeniously created by Toronto’s women-owned sex toy store Good For Her, bring visibility to a small but growing porn market of content created outside of (and more and more recently, within) the predominant mainstream market. In order to be considered for an honor, the work either depicts genuine female pleasure, has a woman leading an integral creation of the work, or expands the boundaries of sexual representation on film and challenges stereotypes found in mainstream porn. I was thrilled to receive “Boundary Breaker” in 2010 for my work in the porn industry, specifically being present online and vocal about my experiences. I’m really flattered by the honor, because I think anyone can do this. Maybe I’m just one of the few right now.

If you film them… they will come!
- Jiz Lee

The more positive reinforcement there is behind budding filmmakers, new companies, alternative views of sex, the more diversity we’ll see in the industry. I’ve been doing porn for the last seven years, and it’s just growing and growing! This year, I’m proud to have been involved with 10 11 of the nominated projects, including five six DVDs and five websites. WOW!

FUCKSTYLES features re-edited scenes from QueerPornTV, including a beautiful and artsy scene of myself and fellow genderqueer performer Papi Coxxx. Gush: The Official Guide to the G-Spot & Female Ejaculation features a solo scene within the context of Dr. Carol Queen’s beginner sex ed for couples. Live Sex Show was a live performance featuring myself and Nina Hartley filmed during the Center for Sex & Culture’s Masturbate-a-thon. What’s special about this particular film is that it includes explicit vaginal fisting, something usually cut out of most distributed DVDs, but a few sex-positive retailers are awesome enough to fight the censorship and carry it! Mommy is Coming is Cheryl Dunye’s explicit raunch comedy filmed in Berlin; in it I play Teo and have a lighthearted BDSM scene with Judy Minx and Lil Harlow. It premiered at Berlinale and is now hitting film festivals across the globe! Taxi Vol 2 includes an emotionally intense scene with myself and Dallas Fivestar, as well as an AVN Nominated three-way with Madison Young and Nic Switch. Padded Submissives includes a scene with Kellly Shibari and Courtney Trouble, which I shot at Jamye Waxman’s crib. BobbiStarr.com includes a POV scene with me and Bobbi from her film Vicarious. CrashPadSeries.com is directed by Shine Louise Houston and includes several scenes I am in — this summer is it’s 5th Anniversary and it has almost 200 episodes! NoFauxxx.com is Courtney Trouble’s first website, including great photos and scenes from her Good Releasing films and more. And my own site JizLee.comYes, this one! — is nominated and includes my membership section “Karma Pervs“, an erotic philanthropic art project where I raise funds for sex-positive, queer and kink friendly non-profits and causes. Phew!

So let’s make MORE porn! Just how MANY submissions were accepted to be nominated for the 2012 Feminist Porn Awards! Congrats to everyone, and I can’t wait to see you in April!

Williams Queer Porn Recap

Last weekend I spoke at Williams College in Queer as Porn: Film Screening & Lecture with Genderqueer Pornstar Jiz Lee. The talk was part of the Mike Dively Committee Twentieth Anniversary Celebration, which is funded from an endowment intended “to develop an understanding of human sexuality and sexual orientation and their impact on culture.”

Fox News was tipped onto the event, and the resulting media buzz pushed various anti-porn agendas and also overshadowed a hate crime experienced by a queer student on campus earlier that week, yet another example of why it is necessary to have safe spaces and events for LGBT. Judging from the Fox report, which actually did seem “fair and balanced”, and the students interviewed articulated some pretty open-minded responses.

Is it appropriate to talk about porn in an academic setting on human sexuality?

Of course it is! Particularly when you consider that society’s lack of cohesive sex education has positioned pornography in an awkward role of substitute teacher. When we don’t have any other explicit sexual information, we turn to porn for examples. And when porn has a limited view of what sex looks like, it starts to define our notions of who has sex, what kind of sex they have, etc… and we don’t see ourselves reflected as sexual beings. This is why I find queer porn valuable, and why I was asked to speak.

Here is the Fox News Article, and the similar story picked up by MSN.com. While Daily Mail UK first incorrectly posted me as a transgender woman, they have since corrected my pronouns, which feels like a small victory in itself.

Adult Video News (AVN) also interviewed me about the appearance, and for the first time in my porn career, the major industry publication used my preferred gender pronouns. I responded extensively: AVN Interviews Jiz Lee About Recent College Appearance.

As to be expected, a number of conservative blogs, including G.O.P. USA, picked up the story. While I find the articles interesting studies on sex shaming and queer-phobia, it did hurt to see these publications post my image and use my sexuality as a platform for entertainment based upon fear and shame. After some consideration I’ve decided to not link to any article that disrespects my gender or sexual identity. As queers, it’s not worth our energy to be brought down by ignorance and negativity.

I personally prefer to focus on progression, and overall, I’d say the event was a positive one that helped to validate many student’s identities and allowed for one-on-one and follow-up emails on questions about queer topics, and on a broader level, resulted in major media using the term genderqueer and respecting gender-neutral pronouns. The college reacted in a way that is to be commended, ensuring (quite literally) a safe space and committing to education through challenging programs that encourage dialogue.

In response to the controversy surrounding the event, Williams students wrote a phenomenal editorial piece We Will Not Be Silenced, in The Williams Record. It is a definite must-read and a future I’m proud to be a part of.

Mommy Is Coming is finally COMING to San Francisco! It is making its USA premiere at Frameline36 on June 16th.

This is definitely a film to catch. It’s Cheryl Dunye’s first foray into adult cinema. The sex scenes are explicit, and part of the plot. Mommy Is Coming was awarded at the Feminist Porn Awards 2012, and will continue to screen worldwide. It was also picked up for distribution by  Raspberry&Cream Films and TLA Releasing. You can find out more at  MommyIsComing.com or Mommy’s Facebook and Twitter pages. Find Cheryl on Facebook and Twitter, too.

Mommy stars Papi Coxxx, with whom I’ve worked with in Shine Louise Houston’sThe Wild Search“, as well as an artsy fisting/strap-on scene on QueerPornTV.com.  Get tickets to Mommy Is Coming, and stick around for a good time partying with Cheryl and some of the SF cast & crew. Doing It Again: Support Tobi Hill-Meyer’s New Trans Woman Porn Project

Mahatma Gandhi once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.”

Though he may have not been thinking about pornography when he said it, the message most definitely applies to sexual expression and visibility. It’s been my motto, in porn and otherwise — it’s a matter of being pro-active and creating positive experiences for a happy and healthy life. While being critical of something is valid and important, when we take an active part in helping to make change we can alter the path for ourselves and others. Sometimes we have to do it ourselves.

(And if we can’t do it ourselves, we can support those who can!)

I want to share one of the Kickstarter projects I’m supporting, an erotic documentary by my friend Tobi Hill-Meyer that weaves together explicit scenes and interview footage from trans women and their partners. Tobi did it the first time with “Doing it Ourselves: Trans Women Porn Project“, and now she’s Doing it Again (kickstarter).

Tobi’s kickstarter has not only met it’s initial goal, but it is now only moments away from reaching a new level of funding goals — and this part applies to genderqueer and non-binary people so you know I’m particularly excited!

Find out more about the project on Kickstarter and check out the Casting Call if you’re interesting in doing it, literally.

Please consider funding and sharing it with others, today!

UPDATE: CONGRATS TOBI ON MAKING A $15,000 GOAL — AND THANK YOU TO ALL WHO PITCHED IN!

Gentleman Handling

Gentleman Handling is a drippingly gorgeous website devoted to the artistic and erotic display of male masturbation. (Yea, I know “drippingly” isn’t an actual word, but that’s exactly how I’d describe something wet and poised with sexual anticipation. Feel me?)

I’ll let the trailer speak for itself:

From the about page:

What we’ve made here, really, is a lovely place to watch moving images of male masturbation. GentlemanHandling attempts to strip the image of male sexual pleasure from its less-than-savory pornographic contexts and situate it in a style of imagemaking that is honest, attentive, and reverent. In our years of experience in the pornosphere, we’ve found that men have just as much to lose as other genders from the dishonesty and superficiality of mass-produced sexual imagery. So we’ve taken up the project of presenting our contributors in a manner that highlights their human-ness, their individual sexual style. Self-pleasure is a deeply personal thing and is often glossed over or neglected in mainstream sexual media. We’re trying to take steps to change that.

Creators Gala Vanting and Aven Frey have added another portrait of male sexuality that we can all appreciate.

A comparison note: the site is a bit similar to Shine Louise Houston’s HeavenlySpire.com, for those interested in artistic videos of men masturbating and with partners which happens to be inclusive to transmale models as well. Another masculine-focused sites is FortheGirls.com. Let’s keep `em coming.

Safer Sex Can Be HOT!

$

Note: this is a follow up of my previous post Safer Sex in Queer Porn and The Condom Debate, which appeared on this site last year, and which I still feel is relavent in the “condom debate.” With the recent backlash against barriers from some in the adult industry, I wanted to join my friend Courtney Trouble in a blog jinx on the topic.

No on Measure B

Measure B in Los Angeles is threatening to mandate the way performers shoot porn in LA County, so many of my friends and associates in the adult industry are doing everything they can in the name of performers’ rights and free speech to spread the word to vote “No” on November 6th.

Though I don’t live or vote in LA, I advocate voting NO on Measure B. (What is Measure B? A quick Internet search will yield incredible results. I also favor Gram Ponante’s post B is for Condoms, and Other Illogical Arguments and Stoya’s Testing vs Condoms in Pornography.) There are many testaments by performers and people in the industry proving our capability to take care of our health. And as you know from my post above, I believe performers should have the right to choose how they’d like to perform — what feels best and safest to them — just as I have found and work to assert in my own performing experience.

I’ve tweeted my advocacy, and have been supportive to those in LA whose careers are most impacted. But in the past few days, I’ve started to see a disappointing trend.

A barrier backlash.

Mocking Gloves and Dental Dams

Associates on Twitter — performers, producers, organizations and advocates — began to MOCK the use of barriers. They warned, “Here’s what Girl/Girl would look like if Measure B passes” and “Show fans what a dental dam looks like — NOT HOT!” and posted staged glove and dam demonstrations with captions like “BUZZKILL.”

My heart sunk. I impulsively hit reply to at least one of these posts, and shared my disappointment publically. Not surprisingly, I was met by opposition, with further insistence that having sex with barriers is “gross.”

But I was also joined by voices of support. While I agree that it’s not porn’s responsibility to educate (unless perhaps, it calls itself a sex ed guide), it’s my hope that porn does have an ethical obligation to work in performers’ best interests. That’s what we are all fighting against, after all.

Signage at Smitten Kitten in Minneapolis.

Don’t Yuk My Yum!

Part of being open-minded about sexuality is to not put down others’ consensual sex just because you don’t like it for yourself. Some call this “sex-positivity”. I just call it being respectful, and realistic.

Not everyone enjoys sex in the same way. Sex is different, that’s kind of the beauty of it. Some like to use barriers, some don’t. I’m not saying that all of LA should be required to use barriers. I’m not saying barriered sex is the only way. Of course not.

In fact, most of the scenes I’ve shot don’t incorporate safer sex supplies, either because I was working with a fluid-bonded lover, or I was shooting for a production where testing was required but barriers were frowned upon. Currently, I enjoy using barriers in my personal life, and I really feel good about the opportunities I have to use them in porn.

Safer Sex can be Hot!

For me, safer sex can be hot sex because it helps me feel more confident and comfortable. I feel more freed to enjoy myself. Also, it’s fun to explore. Not too long ago, I gave dental dams another try, and I discovered that I LOVED the pressure of the thin, taut material against my vulva. I got so aroused by the barrier, that I forcefully ejaculated against it. Imagine pointing a fire hose against a window. That was me.

Safer sex supplies include latex and non-latex condoms, female condoms, gloves, fingercots, and dental dams. Lubricant is a big part of it too, as it provides wet slickness between materials and skin to conduct sensation and heat. There are many tips in using barriers to increase pleasure. Maybe I’ll do a supplemental post on condom, glove and dental dam tips.

I think that safer sex is not a drag. I think safer sex CAN be pleasurable. And safer sex in porn CAN be really fucking hot!  Want an example? Here’s an image I think is sexy:

Akira Raine and Chocolate Chip use a dental dam on queer porn site CrashPadSeries.com, nominated 2011 AVN Awards “Best Alternative Website” and recognized website at 2011 Feminist Porn Awards.

Be Positive

I don’t feel it’s my place to say that the way another person has sex is gross. If it’s not my thing, I simply don’t partake. However if I see others shaming people, particularly within a context where there is already social stigma, I strive to stand up and advocate, just as I am doing to be vocal against Measure B.

As it’s my usual custom to be positive, and to make good out of a poor situation, I prefer to spend my time promoting those who are doing it right, or at least making an effort. I’ll “name-names” in the best possible way.

Here are companies I’ve worked for who go above and beyond to provide safer sex supplies on set and make it known to performers that barriers are okay. These are companies with whom I’ve made my own choices freely about safer sex practices, whether it was getting tested, using barriers, modifying sex acts based on risks, and all combinations of the above. I highly encourage you to support their work. And yes, some of them are in LA!

I’d like to end with an image Courtney shared to illustrate the slogan SAFER SEX IS HOT, GOVERNMENT REGULATION IS NOT. (By the way, I love this image. The photo project fundraiser for St. James Infirmary, a health clinic run by and for sex workers. It was a collaboration between Courtney Trouble, Dylan Ryan, and myself, with the help of our assistant Nic. I wanted the three of us to shoot with latex of various forms, with focused lights illuminating the topic of sex work and safer sex. You can see the entire set on Karma Pervs (the current benefactor is Sex Workers Outreach Project – Bay Area Chapter).

Please help me to spread the idea of respecting each others’ choices in porn and safer sex, and if you’re a voter in LA, please listen to the many, many voices in porn asking you to vote “NO” on Measure B.

Feminist Porn Nominates Justify My Jiz! Now on PinkLabel.tv!

The nominees for the 2013 Feminist Porn Awards have been announced, and I’m thrilled to see Justify My Jiz on the list! That’s great news, but it gets even better: my collaboration with bad boy Wolf Hudson (and editrix Aiden Starr) is up on PinkLabel.tv!

Check it out in my new studio Jiz Lee’s VOID, where I will be adding future sex video exploits. Why “VOID”? To be void is to be invalid, to have a void is to have a want for something or an emptiness (presumably, to fill). There’s a lot of inferred meaning in the word, which also looks a bit like “VOD” (Video on Demand). And as an aside, I am a fan of Enter the Void — which, if you haven’t seen I highly recommend you at least watch Enter the Void’s opening title sequence. “VOID” as a studio on PinkLabel.tv will be my internet fuck hole for porn collaborations and experimental sex films. (So for all those who were wondering if/when I’d start directing… VOID is your answer.)

PinkLabel.tv works as a fair-trade VOD hub for emerging and independent adult filmmakers. So each and every purchase of my video earns me a cut of the profit. Win-win! And if you want to watch anything else on PinkLabel, clicking through my affiliate links like this one: >> PinkLabel.tv << will also earn me a percentage. So watch up!

SWELLCon: Sex & Media Video Conference

SWELLCon is a free, online video conference that presents a number of videos on the topic of sex and media.

One of the videos is CRASHCOURSE: How to Create a Comfy Environment on Set by Jiz Lee and Shine Louise Houston. Shine and I collaborated on this video, which details some key ingredients from the work that we do on the set of CrashPadSeries.com where I work on set as Production Assistant, helping talent during shoots. While there’s a lot more to be said about the various elements that make for a great experience for everyone involved in a production, this video is off to a good start. CRASHCOURSE is an upcoming Pink & White project, with more in the works. In the meantime, here’s the video and description of our submission:

CRASHCOURSE: How to Create a Comfy Environment on Set by Jiz Lee & Shine Louise Houston

Feminists talk about the virtues of “ethical porn,” but how does one DO it, exactly? From a production standpoint, several factors combine to ensure a sex-positive and respectful experience on set. With performers AND crew in mind, these steps help to create one of the fundamental elements of an ethical production. Pink &White Productions founder and director Shine Louise Houston and performer/production assistant Jiz Lee detail the specifics of an ethical environment in producing porn, including: communication and consent, performer care, safer sex, boundaries, gender and language in directing, and much more. With over eight years of award-winning production and performing experience on indie and mainstream sets, Shine and Jiz come together to show how a comfy environment can produce a knock-out porn scene that everyone can be proud of.

Note: There are clips from the set of CrashPadSeries.com in this video which shows naked performers. This video is meant for viewers who are 18 years or older.

About Swellcon: Media has an enormous impact on how we view and engage in conversations about sex and sexuality. We see this on a daily basis at The Smitten Kitten in the way our customers communicate with us, in the ways in which we engage with them and our broader community, and in the broader perceptions of our work and the industry as a whole. Erotic media can be a tool for social change while also furthering sex negative culture and stereotypes. Whether it is a porn film, a book of erotica, or sexy illustration, it is clear that erotic media is abundant and has impact. This year Smitten Kitten is turning 10 years old. In honor of our birthday, we wanted to create something that would be accessible to all our friends and fans regardless of where they are. We have created a video collection entitled Swellcon that could be viewed by everyone for free. Fisting Day

Happy International Fisting Day!

You ready for a monster post? Well grab your lube, lay back, and relax. It’s late on Thursday night and I’m typing this out at one of my favorite bars, El Rio. San Francisco just felt it’s second earthquake today. It makes me shiver thinking about the fragility of our lives, the great divides between the earth and our existence. And then, you know, there’s fisting. Crossing my fingers the ground below my feet withhold a mighty quake, let’s get this blog going.

Not too long ago, I was chatting with my friend and fellow pornographer Courtney Trouble, about her recent film LiveSexShow, which is a fundraiser for the Center for Sex and Culture filmed during the non-profit’s annual Masturbate-a-Thon. I performed with Nina Hartley, for an audience of pleasure activists. And the chemistry was high with me and Nina, and we jumped into each other, and we had a grand time, and during that time, her fingers and then her whole hand went inside my cunt. And then I came for the crowd and for myself, and for my friend holding a video camera for the world to see.

At least, we hope the world could see.

For as long as I’ve done porn, distribution companies and retailers have banned the act of fisting in the films I’ve been in. It feels like it’s always been this way, but that’s not true. It’s only been a little over a decade.

Anti-porn movements, in particular the administrations which coincide with them, have had a bone to pick against pornography. For obvious reasons, I’m pro-porn, sex-positive, and a firm advocate of consensual, ethical, and artistic erotic imagery. For the circles I run in, the act of making porn is a brave, powerful, and righteous thing. We’re representing marginalized communities, taking power through creating our own images of desire. As my friend Shine Louise Houston infamously says, that as a queer woman of color, it’s especially important for her to create her own sexual images. And I completely and passionately, agree. Explicitly demonstrating our pleasure shows authenticity that rivals anything shown of queers in Hollywood films and brings examples of healthy sexuality that have long been denied in sex education classes. Safer sex? Check. Communication? Check. Equal gender agency, you bet. Lube? Right here.

Since 2005, I’ve been appearing in porn for DVD distribution that I knew would not include fisting, one of my favorite sex acts. Even my very first porn scene with my lover at the time, Syd Blakovich. It didn’t make sense that fisting couldn’t be shown, but I tossed it up to it being the fact that porn is marketed and driven by a lot of assumptions about what sells, what sex should look like, what the people who have sex should look like, yada, yada, yada. Basically all the reasons why I knew I was doing something important.

But wait, why is fisting so important? What do I like about it? Ask me? Okay, here’s some actual questions I’ve had, about fisting:

Why is fisting important to you?
My first experiences with hand sex, where my body took in the entire fist of a lover, happened around a time of galactic sexual exploration. I was in my early twenties and it was mind-blowing. The orgasms were intense and I was in an open relationship and was dating a lot of people so it was exciting for me to have sex with friends and teach them how to fist me, to fist others, and to really enjoy practicing sex in a safe way and to experience this with lovers of all kinds of genders and sexual orientations. It was so much fun. Fisting is about being really present and in your body, and ready for a good time.

Why do you love fisting?
What I love about fisting someone vaginally is feeling them take me in. There’s an moment where the person just opens up to you. Once inside, they’re so warm, wet, and every little movement you make can be felt. It’s something that may take time. Fisting is something that doesn’t necessarily happen right away. You put a finger in. Then two. Then three, four, and then… and sometimes after long gentle coaxing, the thumb. Sometimes lovers can try several times in sex before fisting happens. But once you’ve got it, it’s golden! You can angle your hand for G-Spot stimulation. You can find your lovers’ “A Spot”, which is just under the cervix and some like to feel a bit of pressure there. You can carefully stroke and “jerk-off” the cervix, as if it were a small, internal cock. Unlike using a strap-on or dildo toy, my hand can feel every motion. It’s incredibly intimate and really sexy. If the chemistry and connection with my partner is strong, can literally come from penetrating someone with my hand!

As someone who loves to receive a fist, what I enjoy about it is an unparalleled feeling of fullness. The most sensitive areas of the vagina are just within the first few inches inside the vagina, which is where I like to use my kegel and pelvic muscles to grip snugly around a lovers’ wrist, which can be compared to the girth of a medium-large dildo. Deeper inside, pressure feels good for me. I like to rock my hips against a lovers’ hand, or hold very still and squeeze hard, creating a game where I try to hold their hand tightly in place as they move against me. I do my kegel exercises and am pretty strong so I have a lot of control over my vaginal muscles and can make myself very tight, or, allow myself to stretch open. Or pulse between the two extremes. Combining clitoral and vaginal stimulation, the network of nerves and contracting of muscles orchestrate some of the most amazingly intense orgasms I’ve had.

What do you say to people who think it’s dangerous or scary?
Some people think fisting is intense in a bad way — that it hurts. But anyone who loves fisting knows that it can be the most intimate and beautifully connecting experience with a lover. Or a really fun in a three-some — I’ve held the hand, fingers locked, with a lover while the two of us have fisted a friend. I’ve also had both my fists inside two different lovers at the same time, while they kissed intensely. I’ve 69′ed with fisting, and I’ve even fisted myself!

Fisting isn’t any more scary than any kind of unwelcome sexual advance. However many people don’t know that much about it. We learn about sex as only being penis-vagina intercourse. But sex is so much more! We don’t learn much about sexual anatomy, how to communicate with lovers, or about pleasure. In fact, when we see a fist, we may be more inclined to think of it punching someone in the face because we see images of violence more common and at a younger age than we do sex. (ie: Cartoons show characters throwing punches and shooting guns, yet wont show even a bare breast.) In “This Film Will Not Be Rated”, we see the MPAA approve violent scenes with more leniency than they do sex scenes, especially ones featuring female pleasure. So when we as a culture are more familiar with a fist being used to harm someone, it’s no wonder that someone who hasn’t had a healthy sex-positive education about fisting would assume it is painful. In our culture we see fists as painful weapons, when I see them as revolutionary weapons of sex-positive progress. Or, you know, the ASL symbol for the letter “E”. See? That’s not so scary. :-)

What’s your experience with fisting?
Personal love of the topic aside, my work in adult has primarily featured fisting. In fact, I fist in my films more often than I’ve worn a strap-on. This may come as a surprise to many DVD buyers, who would never see the act as it’s been edited or angled out of the scenes, with the exception of online website content for queer porn sites. And with the exception of Courtney Trouble’s new film “LiveSexShow” where I am fisting by Nina Hartley. I’ve also performed as a demo model for Fisting Demonstrations in adult classes such as Reid Mihalko’s Iron Slut: Sex Educator Showdown! and have taught it as a guest lecturer on sex ed at colleges and universities. I am also a contributor in “The Official Book of Sex, Drugs, and Rock n Roll Lists”, where I give my Top Five Songs about fisting.

So there you go. And while it’s not the first time I knew fisting couldn’t be shown in a hardcopy DVD, this year it was the first time I’ve heard of fisting being banned by a Video on Demand (VOD) company due to fisting. And here’s where some background comes into play. Because: WHY is it okay to show fisting ONLINE, but not in a hard copy DVD?

Well. Here’s what I know.

DVD distributors, retailers, and porn producers, are afraid to SELL porn if it means they might be charged with an obscenity. To date, some men are in jail or have had court orders for showing “obscene” content, such as John Stagliano and Seymore Butts. This content includes female ejaculation, enemas, and in 2001, fisting. The charges in the case of fisting were dropped with an plea bargain for a meager $1,000 fine. However this scared distributors because since that date, at least in terms of the companies who have distributed my films, fisting was NOT to be shown. If fisting was present, footage was edited out if it was visible, or left in if the camera angle was such that you couldn’t tell fisting was occurring. Why fisting?

Fisting is on the Cambria List of sex acts not allowed for inclusion in content meant for physical distribution.

From PBS:

On January 18th, 2001, Adult Video News reported on the so-called “Cambria List.”  Paul Cambria, a longtime attorney for the porn industry, was involved in the list’s preparation. The list is controversial within the industry and interpretations differ on how it was meant to be applied. Some in the industry say it represents guidelines for the box-covers of adult videos, not for the sex acts they depict. Nevertheless, there is wide agreement that the Cambria List shows how the adult industry is seeking to be more careful, fearing a potential crackdown on pornography by the Bush Administration.

The Cambria List:

Box-Cover Guidelines/Movie Production Guidelines

Before selecting a chrome please check facial expression. Do not use any shots that depict any unhappiness or pain.

Do not include any of the following:

  • No shots with appearance of pain or degradation
  • No facials (bodyshots are OK if shot is not nasty)
  • No bukakke
  • No spitting or saliva mouth to mouth
  • No food used as sex object
  • No peeing unless in a natural setting, e.g., field, roadside
  • No coffins
  • No blindfolds
  • No wax dripping
  • No two dicks in/near one mouth
  • No shot of stretching pussy
  • No fisting
  • No squirting
  • No bondage-type toys or gear unless very light
  • No girls sharing same dildo (in mouth or pussy)
  • Toys are OK if shot is not nasty
  • No hands from 2 different people fingering same girl
  • No male/male penetration
  • No transsexuals
  • No bi-sex
  • No degrading dialogue, e.g., “Suck this cock, bitch” while slapping her face with a penis
  • No menstruation topics
  • No in-cest topics
  • No forced sex, rape themes, etc.
  • No black men-white women themes

Several things are not on this list and several things are on this list which should never have been. I mean, WTF?!

I emailed Queery Bradshaw, who has a legal background and she confirmed what I expected about the legal aspects behind several porn obscenity trials when they come to bringing visibility to marginalized sexual practices. Particularly in terms of freedom of expression. She wrote back:

It’s a double edged sword because the more a topic, scene or act becomes mainstream, the least likely it is going to be considered obscene against the community standard. But, if you’re constantly censored for fear of being prosecuted, you can’t make those acts known or common place. I know authors that have had fisting (or the mention of sex at all even) censored out of their beautiful non-erotic literary works of art. People are afraid and the only way to stop that fear is to talk about it, but you don’t know if you talk about it if you’re going to be prosecuted. And that is why I totally agree with you Jiz that this is completely and totally a free speech censorship issue and that we need to talk about how healthy it is so people stop seeing fisting as this thing that people do to degrade and dishonor another (which is justification often for censoring anything).

Despite this go-to list, there’s more info to know about pornography and obscenity, which is the Miller Test, which courts have gone to in efforts to determine what might be obscene when there’s no written rule. Here’s Constance Penley talking about obscenity and pornography. (Constance is a co-editor of the upcoming “Feminist Porn Anthology” which will be made available to the gender studies classes to colleges and universities world-wide.)

The Miller test was developed in the 1973 case Miller v. California. It has three parts:

  • Whether “the average person, applying contemporary community standards”, would find that the work, taken as a whole, appeals to the prurient interest,
  • Whether the work depicts/describes, in a patently offensive way, sexual conduct specifically defined by applicable state law,
  • Whether the work, taken as a whole, lacks serious literary, artistic, political or scientific value.

The work is considered obscene only if all three conditions are satisfied.

The first points are up to the standards of the community. What community? Whatever applies! That’s what makes it vague. The last one in particular is held up to whatever is reasonable to a person of the United States as a whole. The Miller Test is basically the reason why it’s okay to have more freedom of sexuality online, while less on physical DVDs. While there are many areas in the United States where it is illegal to mail pornography, it’s more difficult to determine online community. This is especially true for queers who at least in my case have found community online. To further prove my point, many queers think fisting is completely normal. (If not just normal, it’s amazing!)

If I had a dime for every time I’ve given a talk and had people give me a confused “WTF?” look when I brought up the fact that fisting was banned from DVDs “Why? What’s wrong with fisting?” I would have enough money to pay my way into congress and provide adequate (queer and kink friendly) education to every citizen in the US so that people will understand pleasure and sex-positivity.

So here we are.

I’ve fisted in much of my films and online content. In fact, I think I’ve fisted more times than I’ve squirted or even worn a strap-on. It’s that common. While I have been somewhat unfortunately hesitant to fist on film because I know about the ban, I also have the liberation with companies who have web content because I know they wont have to edit it out. I also know that film crews can film a “soft” shot of the action if they so please. It’s something I’ve dealt with for a while now, and because I know that the way we consume porn is changing and going more and more to the internet so eventually fisting will reign.

Imagine my surprise when I heard that Courtney’s film submitted for VOD was denied because of the scene. Not VOD! The internet is supposed to be okay with fisting, because it’s my community who likes to see it. That’s what prompted our Fisting Day. We have to let people know more about fisting. Why it’s supposedly banned, why it’s awesome if they’ve never thought about it before. Why it’s okay, even political, to love fisting.

If you want to watch me fisting, I recommend QueerPorn.TV scene with Papí Coxxx and most of my scenes on CrashPadSeries.com, including cool double fisting and simultaneous fisting scenes with Syd Blakovich & Micah Riot, and Dallas & Vai. And ANOTHER fisting scene with Nina.

Finally, as promised in my post announcing fisting day, here is a small gallery of fisting!

Dana Vespoli is one of the best directors in porn. So when called me up and asked me if I’d like to work for her, I jumped. It was also the first time I would have the opportunity to meet and work with Sovereign Syre. My general rule is to only work with people who I’ve already met, but I make exceptions when I’m crushed out on their intellect. (My photo shoot with Stoya fell under this category. I’m a sucker for smarties.) So I took a chance based purely on the words of Sovvy’s blog and Twitter, where I am smitten by her wit and honesty. She picked me up from Burbank Airport for a quick bite to eat and we got to know each other before our call time. A few hours later, we were RTing booty pics and flirting poolside.

Though I don’t identify as a lesbian (I’m genderqueer), I value the opportunity to work within “Girl on Girl” or Lesbian Porn, bringing more butch visibility to female sexuality. Even if my preferred pronouns (they/them) are not used, I can still insert my androgynous, genderqueer aesthetics into the industry and open it up to more possibilities of eroticsing non-binary gender expressions. Simple things like hairy legs and short hair make me a “gateway queer” in exposing curious viewers to diverse gender and sexual experiences. Plus, as was definitely the case of Tombois 2, it’s a great job.

Description: In the second installment of Sweetheart’s sexy series, lesbian butches and femmes come together in four electric scenes. Stunning Jiz Lee seduces curvy Sovereign Syre poolside, driving the beauty into multiple orgasms. Zany beauty Celeste Star tries to turn on boyish Alani Pi, as the cute butchy girl tries to fix Celeste’s car. Alani manages to fix more than Celeste’s car as the two pleasure each other over and over. Tomboi Raven Rockette works to convince girly girlfriend Jodi Taylor to come out to her parents, plying her with mind-blowing orgasms in the process, and finally Nina Hartley and Lily Cade go at it, showing everyone why she won the Mile High Sweepstakes in an adrenaline raising, crazy scene filled with passion and pleasure.

April-Flores-Jiz-Lee

The last few weeks have been a busy blur.  I’ve obviously fallen out of touch with regular blog updates, but made a resolution to keep at it, so I can’t let these two major adult industry events come and go without some sort of documentation. The time spent was tiring, though I’m one of the fortunate few to have escaped without catching a flu, but also left me with more of a taste of entry into the mainstream, and more fuel to the fire to keep at it. You know that saying, “I don’t give a fuck?” Well, I may not care about naysayers and negativity, but I care deeply, and I give a LOT of fucks.

I attended the Adult Entertainment Expo to speak on behalf of Shine Louise Houston in the “Feminist Porn Mystique Panel” at AEE, moderated by Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals, with Nina Hartley, Dana Vespoli, Angie Rowntree (of Sssh.com), and Stormy Daniels. The panel posed a discussion on the concepts behind the feminist porn movement, though it also hit my pet peeve nerve with many comments conflating the term with “porn for women.” If this is your first time hearing the buzzword and your curiosity is piqued, may I direct your curiosity to The Feminist Porn Book. There’s also the annual Feminist Porn Conference at University of Toronto, at which I’ll be presenting again this year, followed by the Feminist Porn Awards, and you can browse the Complete List of Feminist Porn Award Winners (2006-2013).

I also had the pleasure of staying up until “dumb O’clock” with Lux Alptraum proving once again that we can talk about porn forever, and along with Sex Nerd Sandra, Justine Joli, Gram Ponante and others got to experience the magic of sushi with watermelon Pop Rocks! Thank you, Chris Santos.

The trip culminated with the AVN Awards, where I was nominated in a new category, Best Safe[r] Sex Scene with Manuel Ferrara in Girl/Boy, by Dana Vespoli. “Best Safe Sex Scene” really was the perfect category. A large part of the rarity in my doing work with cisgender men is the fact that I only work with condoms. It’s surprisingly difficult even within the few experiences I’ve had shooting with directors and companies that are okay with it. It’s not easy to shoot porn with condoms; they have to be a good fit and there’s extra lubrication required. But for me, the effort is worth it. While I could see our scene nominated simply for Best Sex Scene, the fact that AVN added this category calls a lot of attention on the conversation on condoms in porn. (If you don’t know my stance, in a nutshell: I’m in favor of performer’s choice either way, without company pressure, and with better non-latex options, and more lube education.)

The AVN Award Show was fun. I got to FINALLY meet Siri, a performer who has said she was inspired to get into porn through my work, and whom I have the utmost respect for. Someday we’ll have the perfect opportunity to work together, and it will be magical. I also had the pleasure of sitting at the show with Betty Blac, an old college friend who also came to me for porno advice and who is also making waves in the industry: she was nominated for AVN’s new category, BBW of the Year, though she could have also fit into the New Starlet category. Betty and I stayed until the end to see the winners. (Only a few category winners are accepted onstage, while the rest scroll on the screen.)

Neither Girl/Boy nor CrashPadSeries.com (nominated for Best Alternative Website) won, but the nomination is always appreciated as it’s a nod towards the work that myself and other queer, indie directors and performers are doing. And, it’s a reflection on the state of the industry and how society views and consumes sexuality. The big win of the night went to my DOLL April Flores, who was awarded BBW of the Year, though she could have easily been inducted into the Hall of Fame for how influential she’s been. AVN also projected an image of my friend and honorary Queer Porn Mafia inductee, the late Carlos Batts, who passed away last October. We still miss him.

If you nominate them, they will come. This was my first time attending XBIZ 360 Conference and the XBIZ Awards. After a few days home to take care of business (moving to a new SF apartment) I was back on a plane, this time to LA to moderate “Porn Disrupted: The Politics of Changing Sexual Attitudes” with panelists Shine Louise Houston, Dr. Carol Queen (Sexologist and Co-Director of Center for Sex & Culture), Dr. Chauntelle Tibbals (scholar, author of You Study WHAT?!), Ben Tao (Offbeatr), and Collin Rowntree (Wasteland). I think the panel went well, given the short amount of time and the diverse experiences of the panelists, and as a first-time moderator, I learned a lot.

It also felt important to have a chance to share my personal experience of how I came to find myself wanting to do porn, having been inspired by the late Asian American trans male pornographer Christopher Lee’s Sex Flesh in Blood, as well as the works of SIR Productions, who “disrupted” my notion of the monolithic porn stereotype and “broke” what porn meant to me, thus allowing me to see myself reflected on a sexual screen. I am grateful to have been invited to take such a charge, and I hope it can happen again next year.

It was also great to get to know the panelists, and vendors who were there. I really hit it off with Colin, and it was a treat to run into Nenna (check out Feelmore’s Films!), and to finally meet Tres from Spareparts.

The highlight of XBIZ for me was being invited to present an award on stage with April. Presenting an award felt like an award in itself. The two of us walked out on the stage holding hands, and took our place at the podium standing squarely to face a sea of the adult industry’s most influential professionals. Friends in the crowed went nuts (shout out to Stockroom!) and the audience erupted into cheers and applause.

I know I use the word “visible” a lot, but it truly felt like we were being seen by the industry, and we probably were literally seen for the first time for quite a few in the audience. We were visible, validated, and I was glowing. We announced the winners for two of the night’s Specialty Categories that would receive their awards on stage: Gay Movie of Year and Transsexual Performer of the Year — Congrats Venus Lux!

Venus-Lux
Venus Lux, 2014 XBIZ Awards Transsexual Performer of the Year!

Where AVN had nominated my scene with Manuel for Best Safe Sex Scene, XBIZ had nominated it for simply Best Sex Scene (Non-Feature Film). It wasn’t awarded, however it received what I feel was an even more appropriate accolade: Dana was awarded Best Director for Girl/Boy! She and John Stagliano (Evil Angel), and Manuel, all took a big risk in creating a hardcore adult film that played with gender in a transgressive way. Check out the Press Release posted by XBIZ. I’m proud of her success and honored to have been its inspiration. It’s pretty queer for a straight porn, and more importantly, it has the distribution power that can put it on the shelves in a lot of places queer porn doesn’t have access.

But the night wasn’t over yet. As the non-stage awards scrolled and the grand ballroom began to clear out, I sat fixed to the screen with fellow porners James Darling, April, and Courtney Trouble. James and Courtney were nominated for an impressive slew of awards spanning the trans, feminist, and specialty categories for their work with FTMFucker.com, TransGrrrls and QueerPorn.tv.

Jiz-James-April-Courtney

We waited, and cheered for joy when Pink & White Productions (Directed/Founded by Shine Louise Houston) won the award show’s newest category, Feminist Porn Release of the Year for its short film OCCUPIED: a queer hardcore romance for the 99% … and then AGAIN when CrashPadSeries.com won Specialty Site of the Year! Specialty is an award that had previously gone to Kink.com, a company multiple times larger than CrashPad. In truth, Pink & White feels like the underdog in the grand scheme of things; a queer, woman of color-run company that treats its business like art. It’s something my porn friends share; a desire to be recognized as legitimate in the business, while balancing our values and interests in sexual expression.

At both award events I experienced a lot of invisibility. Neither being famous nor feminine, many photographers overlooked me, and no one asked for an interview, though one host admitted I wasn’t mainstream enough (no harm done; she’s right). Yet, the privilege I do have grants me a chance to access parts of the industry that many of my peers cannot. I hope to be a “gateway queer” in this fashion. That by continuing to be myself, I can forge a path towards greater gender acceptance and sexual diversity. On a hike up the heights of Griffith Park with Tyler Knight the morning after the awards, he told me I was an “ambassador” in my field. I hope I can do myself, and others, proudly. (Pun intended…)

Princeton IvyQ Conference

I’m presenting a screening of a selection of my porn performances based on my workshop “Fucking for REEL” at Princeton University. I have had the great honor of being invited to come to colleges and universities to share my perspectives and experiences in regards to pornography, gender and sexuality among other topics. It’s with pride that I will be presenting at Princeton, in part because it’s a place I wouldn’t have been able to attend due to admission or tuition. To be invited openly as a genderqueer sex worker as part of the IvyQ conference is extremely validating, and signifies progressive conversations on gender and sexuality.

The topic of feminism and porn has become a popular one in recent months, due in large part to release of The Feminist Porn Book and forthcoming Porn Studies, Routledge peer-reviewed journal. Conversations about pornography are worthy of scholastic attention and are particularly relevant as a site of intersectionality within race, gender and sexuality and a convergence of body politics, sexual health, ethics and agency.
IvyQ is a conference which aims to create a pan-Ivy community of LGBTQ students and allies equipped with the skills to examine their identities, value those of others, and understand intersectionality. The steps to achieving this vision are three-fold: creating experiences which foster meaningful and productive social networks; educating students about the history and multiplicity of voices in the LGBTQ movement and the possible trajectories of its future; and empowering all students to feel confident in their identities and their potential to instill positive change in their own lives and the communities they inhabit. IvyQ stresses the acknowledgment and application of privilege for positive and lasting social change for LGBTQ communities.

Here’s the downloadable PDF of the entire schedule; the presenters at this event are incredible: IvyQ Program Final.

Fucking for Reel: Jiz Lee Screening
Saturday, February 8th, 4:15- 5:45pm
Lewis Library 138

One of the most recognized genderqueer performers in the adult industry, Jiz Lee has worked in porn spanning queer, indie and mainstream genres from San Francisco to Berlin. The iconic queer porn performer has developed an organic “self-agent” process, creating a sustainable position from which to express their genuine sexual pleasure on camera. In this screening, Jiz will present highlights from their work and lead a Q&A discussion on queer pornography, visibility, and sexual media. This presentation is intended for mature audiences over the age of 18 only. The screening will contain explicit, queer sex acts that were conducted with consent and safer sex methods in practice.

Update: For those who want more information about the clips I screened, here’s a list:

Into the Wild: 2014 Feminist Porn Awards & Conference

San Francisco is wet. It’s been a few days of fairly consistent rain and I’m grateful because the entire Bay Area has been feeling a draught. It needs this. I’m also grateful because I LOVE the rain. It’s a cozy buzz with a recharging quality to it. I am happy. Yesterday I was at Pink & White’s studio with Shine and we worked to a soundtrack of jazz flowing over the downpour and occasional booms of a passing thunderstorm. I hummed along and danced in place at my standing desk. Bliss. There’s a word for people like me: pluviophile. (I’d even go so far as to say pluviosexual.)

On this day, I’m sipping chai at a coffee shop with large windows sprinkled with raindrops. Very soon, I’ll be far away from my cozy, head-in-a-laptop life, and thrust into the wild world of the Feminist Porn Awards and Conference. I do say “wild” with love. Its politicized identity seems inherently unruly, but that’s also where I find value within a community driven by passion. There’s no other event quite like it, and it remains my favorite adult industry event hands-down. Spread over the course of four days (screening, awards, and two days of conference), it’s what I will now dub as the Feminist Porn Retreat.

BTW, if this is the first time you’ve heard the buzzword “feminist porn,” here is my working definition: Feminist Porn is a framework used to discuss pornography (including production and consumption) with ethics, gender equality and socio-economic values at its core. Many self-identified feminist pornographers describe their work as having motivations of expanding conventional ideas about desire and beauty standards, pleasure and power dynamics, and notions of performer agency, sexual health, and consent. I don’t see it as a noun, or as a defined thing. Identity is in the eye of the beholder. So like the Wallace-Bechdel Test, I prefer to refer to it as an analysis tool for which all porn can be applied. (I’d also recommend you pick up the Feminist Porn Book and newly released Porn Studies Journal.)

Jiz-Lee-Feminist-Porn-Awards-Audience-2013

Love Wolf Hudson’s “what the..!?” face. Meanwhile, I’m caught livetweeting his win!

And, I’ll be sitting pretty in a theater full of hot performers, producers and fans, to cheer on the winners and nominees. Compared to prolific years prior, this time I only appear in one nominated film, despite the fact that I was in a slew of movies released last year such as Girl/Boy, Tombois 2, Strapped Dykes 2, and several amazing films that will hopefully be released soon. Regardless, it’s quality over quantity and I’m as excited as ever.

The nominated film is Dear Jiz, shot almost exactly one year ago during the Feminist Porn Awards by Ms. Naughty. It’s a vulnerable solo scene under the running water of a bath, and was written by… well, people who have emailed me over the years. I read quotes from “fan mail” that have touched me. It’s a fitting narration for a masturbation, as I struggle under the emotional weight of what it feels like to receive such attention, not knowing where to channel the overwhelmed feelings of responsibility. Submerged and raw in Black/White.

Still from Dear Jiz, a vulnerable solo shoot up for nomination.

I’ll be presenting Dear Jiz along with Ms Naughty at the Feminist Porn Conference. I’ll also be with Pink & White Productions at the conference, where BED PARTY will screen with a Q&A by Shine Louise Houston, and I’ll present two business track seminars: “If You Build It, They Will .com” on Web Development (along with co-presenter Chris Lowrance) and my “More Buck for Your Bang” presentation on empowering producers and performers with an understanding of Affiliate Marketing.

See my sidebar for a list of scheduled public events. If you’ll be there and see me, ask me for a hug. (No, seriously. I’ll be bleeding that weekend and feeling especially shy and hugs will help.) Recap from the 2014 Feminist Porn Marathon (And Award-Winners!)

I’m back in the bay, and wow. What a whirlwind of events up in Toronto! Did I say Feminist Porn Retreat? More like Feminist Porn Marathon. The last few days have been a bit of a blur, as I’m winding down from jam-packed weekend of screenings, panels, and meetings. And I’ve just barely begun to catch up on emails and return to my regularly scheduled programing here in San Francisco. (Speaking of which: I’m training — and fundraising — for a 191 mile relay race next month, and I’ve got my eyes set on my first Olympic Triathlon coming around the bend! More on that later…)

As I mentioned in my last post about the awards and conference, I was there with my new behind-the-scenes job at Pink & White Productions. Shine’s film BED PARTY was nominated — and it won Best Boygasm! The Feminist Porn Awards gave it a special honor — and a cheeky name — that importantly recognizes male sexuality and pleasure within the feminist porn framework. I’m proud to have been a part of production. Special congrats to its staring kinky porn couple Eden Alexander and Sebastian Keys. I’m grateful for their bravery and trust in sharing such an intimate part of their lives with us. (You want to see my favorite picture of them? NSFW for adorably big balls, so click here. A close second place is his puppy mask.) You can watch the trailer — and full film — on PinkLabel.tv.

Jiz Lee and Shine Louise Houston from Pink and White Productions at the 2014 Feminist Porn Awards

Shine and I are STOKED! (Cool butt toy trophy designed by Fucking Sculptures!)

As 2013 Heartthrob of the Year, I had the honor of passing the torch to this year’s Heatthrob: Zahra Stardust! A few years ago I had the pleasure of working with her first-hand ;-) and she’s a fucking firecracker: smart as hell, proud progressive politics, stunningly beautiful, and a versatile switch performer who has the magic touch. And she’s a fellow fisting freedom advocate! In my speech announcing her award, I said that strong performers are essential in feminist porn; and to me, she’s one of the brightest. I love that the Feminist Porn Awards recognize performers who are not only sexy as hell, but also incredibly kind and outspoken individuals. Brava!

Jiz Lee and Zahra Stardust 2014 Feminist Porn Awards

Fistbump to 2014 Heartthrob of the Year, Zahra Stardust!

A beautiful moment happened at the awards show, that just blew me away. The event coordinators held a remembrance for my late friend, Carlos Batts, complete with showing some of his work, and a heartfelt speech by Tristan Taormino. They awarded him Indie Porn Icon (he was a truly innovating artist) and then his late wife and muse, and my Doll, April Flores accepted his award on stage with a moving speech which incorporated some of his own words from past interviews about his art.

Art is the strongest form of activism. Art encompasses everything. It encompasses the queer movement, fat activism, racism, all the “isms”—that’s our job… My motivation is to cross boundaries and create a dialogue, and that’s what I’ve done it for since I was a kid. – Carlos Batts (RIP)

It was one of the most powerful remembrances of an artist that I’ve witnessed in person, and the room seemed united in love for someone so important to our community, and a dear friend. Even people in attendance who had never met Carlos were in tears, visibly moved. We had celebrated his birthday at the Bloor Holiday Inn last year, and this year I was inspired again and grateful to have known him. This photo below captures the moment beautifully.

April Flores Feminist Porn Awards

The awards ceremony was incredible and I’m so fortunate to be able to go every year and participate. Each year there are more and more producers creating exciting new works, and it feels like the conversations and dialogues are growing, public perception of porn is changing, and as I continue to work on both sides of the camera, I’m grateful for all the support and encouragement along the way.

While I was in Toronto, I also shot porn! I had barely enough time to squeeze in a quick scene for a new queer porn site. (To be announced soon!) What was really special about this shoot, besides my co-star being ANDRE SHAKTI, was that I was reminded how lucky I am to be able to negotiate what I’d like to do for the camera. That’s one part of what makes queer porn so special to me, which is that it’s not necessarily bound by the same constraints as other kinds of pornography. So for what was less than a quarter of my mainstream rate, Andre and I simply made out and dry-humped on a bed. Though they only wanted about 15 minutes of footage, they let us go for as long as we like, and we ended up grinding for almost an hour. Let me say that I was so wound-up and horny, that I got off  – hard. It was super satisfying, and I love that I can not even take off my underwear to have one of the hottest scenes. Here’s a sneak peek:

Andre Shakti Jiz Lee

Perving on Andre Shakti, before my dirtiest-tamest scene yet!

I also attended the Feminist Porn Conference, and was booked solid with presentations and seminars. My favorites were the Business Track sessions. This year I presented a “CrashCourse” Affiliate Marketing 101 seminar (More Buck for your Bang) designed to empower performers and producers with the knowledge of affiliate programs and how to use them to encourage ethical porn consumption (by helping fans with a direct link of where to purchase) and very importantly, helping to narrow the financial gap between performers and producers. Performers often think that there’s only one paycheck for a scene — but with just a little know-how, we can add affiliate links — like the kind on my blog — and continue to be supported by our work, like royalties! I teach an ongoing workshop at Pink & White especially for the adult community. I also had the pleasure of presenting for the first time with Pink & White’s web developer Chris Lowrance in which we attempted the impossible — how to build a website (in a 90 minute session). Entitled, “If You Build It, They Will .com”, we presented web development and troubleshooting specifically for porn sites focused on queer and feminist content. You can find the handout on Pink & White Productions, and look forward to a video presentation soon (our new CrashCourse project will help educate new content creators.) Can you tell I’m totally jazzed about this new direction in my work-life? I love my job!

There were so many wonderful people I met, some in person for the first time, I can’t possibly name them all here. But I’m eagerly awaiting next year, when the Feminist Porn Awards celebrates its 10th Anniversary, which will also be my 10th year in porn. It will be epic!

Without further ado, here’s the winners. (You can also browse the complete list: Feminist Porn Awards Winners 2006-2014.)

Wet Dreams: Jiz Lee & Lyric Seal

Jiz Lee and Lyric Seal Going Here, Wet Dreams

About two years ago, I spoke at Smith College and afterwards, met someone who would reignite within me a passion for performance, artful sex, and creative embodiment: Lyric Seal. Fast-forward and we’re on porn-date #2, scheming ideas for our collaboration with Courtney Trouble for the forthcoming film, Wet Dreams. We — Lyric especially — had a lot of grandiose ideas for the shoot, but we ended up with Lyric’s vision of filming within an elevator shaft. In their own words:

“Once in high school I had a horrific experience of being trapped in a very small, very old elevator for an hour at my school. Cops had to drag me out by my arms (I don’t like cops) and the front page of our county newspaper read, “GIRL IN WHEELCHAIR EXTRICATED FROM ELEVATOR.” Humiliating. So I thought, what if I was with someone really cool and hot when that elevator stopped? What if I knew and loved my body? What if I got to have sex I like to have with my strange queer crip body, and when the elevator starts working again, I didn’t even notice? What if the headline read, “GIRL IN WHEELCHAIR GIVES ORAL SEX.” I wouldn’t say that’s a particular fetish, but it is a way I am taking back my memories, and owning my survival, rather than letting trauma own me. And duh I got to have sex with one of my best friends and porn crush, Jiz Lee, so that’s a dream right there.”

Description: What if we could turn places of trauma into places of pleasure? What if we could close our eyes and dream, what if sound guided us through our fantasies? What if our heart beats were louder than halting stops, if we were open to love in scary places? In Going Here, Lyric and Jiz explore the edges of danger, public sex, experimentation, and lust. This exclusive excerpt from Courtney Trouble’s upcoming film Wet Dreams is about letting our fantasies take over all else.

Safer Sex in Queer Porn and the Condom Debate

$
0
0

I added a sticky to this post because even though it was written in 2011 for Measure B, the issue of mandating condoms in sex is still rearing it’s ugly head with a California Assembly Bill, AB1576, and this time it has terrifying legal consequence. My thoughts haven’t changed much on the subject, so I’ve included updates below.

Published June 6th, 2011

It’s late afternoon on a grey, overcast Monday in the SOMA district of San Francisco.

For the last few months — and especially this weekend — I’ve been reading about changes happening in Los Angeles in the mainstream porn industry. I’d like to think there’s more difference between San Francisco’s little queer porn hub and LA’s porn valley, but like today’s weather, there’s a lot of grey.

Tomorrow, June 7th, at 10am, there is a Medical Meeting with the Cal-OSHA (California Division of Occupational Safety and Health) Board of Directors addressing Adult Industry Regulation. (Address: CalTrans Building, 100 S. Main St., Los Angeles, CA 90012). Porn performer Danny Wylde has been one of the most vocal industry bloggers about the recent news; his position as a performer and his writing skills as a blogger put him on the forefront as a key player within a pool of increasingly visible sexually progressive adult stars. Click on over to read his blog post “The Condom Debate,” because I think he most succinctly describes the issue at hand. Additionally, Violet Blue wrote a fantastic article “Real Sex and Porn Sex” not too long ago, which also serves as a must-read to more fully understand safer sex issues within porn.

Akira Raine and Chocolate Chip use a dental dam on queer porn site Crash Pad Series, 2012 Feminist Porn Awards Winner and 2014 XBIZ Awards Specialty Site of the Year. Photo: CrashPadSeries.com

I decided to add my own story to the “debate” because my experience is somewhat isolated as a queer porn performer. And this grants me interesting and conflicting thoughts around the issue. Just earlier, I was prompted to write and share my thoughts when I saw some posts on the subject by LA Girl-Girl porn performers:

“Think the condoms/porn debate doesn’t effect you? A girl-girl sex scene will require dental dams & gloves & there is no testing requirement.”

“So those condom regs, they are a lot worse than just condoms. Gloves, dams, face shields etc. This passes and porn’s done in CA.”

What’s wrong with barriers? I happen to be someone who adores gloves, and reading these made me feel shamed for enjoying safer sex in my personal life as well as on the screen, especially when the company is open to it. If you don’t like using dental dams or gloves, that’s okay but it’s good to note that the tests required for most mainstream porn studios, including Girl/Girl performers, are designed for heterosexual sex risks. In the queer porn that I’m familiar with, using barriers and opting not to have a straight porn test is a common choice among performers, who even bring their own dental dams to set along with their preferred lube.

One of the main differences I see between “mainstream” porn and San Francisco-based “queer” pornography* is the focus on sex-positive values which includes allowing diverse models to make the choice to best protect their sexual health. (*What is queer porn? It’s a term currently used to describe the work I perform in, where models span a range of queer sexual orientations and gender identities — queer women and men, trans and cisgender, and genderqueers for example — so it’s not simply defined as gay, lesbian, trans, or bisexual.)

How does giving models the choice best protect their sexual health? I believe a choice with a range of protections is better than one blanket-level standard (whether it’s barriers, or testing) for a number of reasons: mainly, it allows for flexibility depending on the models’ diverse needs. All our needs are different. Some models are real-life partners who are fluid-bonded and monogamous with their own testing precautions, or, poly/non-monogamous lovers who have specific arrangements. Some models are sex workers and have boundaries in porn that they may or may not have with their clients. For some models, they are topping in the scene and will not be exposed to any bodily fluids. For some models who work in LA or other industry porn, it’s a special shoot that allows them to have whatever kind of sex they want, or to perform with partners who are outside mainstream aesthetics. Models have different sexual histories, so choices in safer sex practices may vary based on our needs.

In addition, models have different sexual anatomy, regardless of gender expression, which may lend to different sexual risks. Different sex acts also pose varying sexual risks. So there’s a lot of variables and the awareness of all these different situations and kinds of risks, and using the information to apply to sexual practice is called “risk-based assessment.”

When I perform in porn, I make decisions within each scene based on risk-based assessment. My sexual health is put at various risks based on the anatomy of my co-star and what sexual acts we will do together. Here’s a chart I found which I modified to read as penis/vulva (as opposed to man/woman):

What You Can Get if Your Partner is Infected

KNOWN RISKS

POSSIBLE RISKS

UNKNOWN

Giving oral sex to someone’s penis
Giving oral sex to someone’s vulva none
Receiving oral sex if you have a penis none
Receiving oral sex if you have a vulva none
Anal sex – penetrating with your penis none
Anal sex – receiving from a penis none
Penis/Vaginal sex, if you have  a penis none
Penis/Vaginal sex, if you have a Vagina none
Oral-anal Sex none

* You could be at risk if the receiver has just topped someone else.

** Very low risk.

*** Unprotected anal sex is a very high risk activity for a bottom, much more so than for a top. The risk of HIV transmission to a bottom during unprotected anal sex is 15 in 1,000 versus 3 in 10,000 from a bottom to a top.

  • Kissing, mutual masturbation, and frottage or dry humping are considered safer sex activities, with little to no risk of STD transmission.
  • Using latex condoms (male or female) significantly reduces the risk of contracting STDs during anal, vaginal and oral sex.
  • Washing hands and the genital area thoroughly before and after oral-anal sex reduces the risk of transmission of most of the listed STDs and conditions. Condom use reduces transmission risk even further.

Source: SF City Clinic, via Pink & White Productions (who provides safer sex resources to models). There’s also this guide with risks and tips for Queer Trans Men.

New info sent to me by Metis Black of Tantus Inc: “HPV isn’t an unknown for oral sex- 35% of the throat cancer in men is from HPV and rising.” [source: Wall Street Journal" Throat Cancer Linked to Virus"]

In queer porn scenes, my costars who are lovers and friends, the sexual acts are up to us, including what safer sex practices we use to help protect ourselves and each other. This sometimes takes the form of testing, gloves, condoms on toys, whether or not to go down on each other, whether or not to have anal sex, and a multitude of other choices.

Nina Hartley and I use gloves, condom on a silicone dildo, and water-based lube in our scene for CrashPadSeries.com.

Up until about a month ago, industry professionals in Los Angeles, and sometimes in SF such as Kink.com models, did routine testing at AIM (Adult Industry Medical Heath). It is industry standard that an AIM Panel test with negative results be current within 30-days (two days for some companies).  Some people call this a “clean” vs a “dirty” test; I dislike those terms as it furthers cultural stigma around sexually transmitted diseases, the people who have them and even the industries they work in. Because of this, I often use the phrase “clear” or “current;” which implies that my test results are satisfactory and it hasn’t expired. After AIM closed, Talent Testing Services and Cutting Edge Testing took its place, which includes trichomoniasis, syphilis, and more.

I don’t recall when I did my first test for porn, though it wasn’t for a few years after I had already been in the industry working in queer porn with friends and long-term fluid-bonded partners. When I did get tested specifically at AIM for porn, I found it interesting that the same test is required in LA for both Boy/Girl and Girl/Girl shoots. (Note that while I am female-bodied. I don’t identify as a girl, and many of my scenes — as well as those of many trans male friends  – are often categorized within mainstream as G/G.) As a performer working with a cisgender female costar, I paid out-of-pocket for the $130 test which at the time covered: HIV-1 DNA, Chlamydia & Gonorrhea by PCR. These are high risk for sex that is heterosexual, penis/vagina and penis/anus sex with the female performer receiving. I’ve had to have this test for a scene where I was performing strap-on sex, topping a female co-star. In this situation, my risk is very very low; I’m more at risk for HPV and herpes which are not required tests. However the standard was to have this test so I complied. Naturally, I’m happy to be tested regularly; it’s never a bad thing to have too many tests. I’m just using the example to point out how the testing standards are skewed towards heterosexual sex. (UPDATE: Tests now run $240 and are good for 14 days, covering: HIV-1 NAT, HBsAg, Anti-HCV, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, Trichomonas Vaginalis, Syphilis (RPR), TREP-SURE EIA – Treponema pallidum Antibody, IgG by ELISA. When I showed my most recent lab result to my Kaiser doctor, she was impressed.)

Personally, I love performing safer sex practices on screen because it makes me feel safer and comfortable. I also think it’s great to have examples of people using gloves and demonstrating other safer sex practices because it shares with our community to those who may be new to the idea of safer sex. While no substitute for good sex education, safer sex demonstrated in queer porn can provide examples of communication and healthy sex practices. The sex education I received in school didn’t include homosexuality or bisexuality. At some point condoms were introduced as pregnancy prevention. It wasn’t until I was in college that I learned about STD risks, and discovered the joy of lubricant. (As a youth, I learned the hard way that suntan and massage lotions break condoms.) There’s a lot about sex ed that we aren’t taught in schools or in our culture in general. To this day, I still meet people who think it’s good to “double-bag” condoms — don’t, it only makes them more likely to break — or the idea that all lube will give them yeast infections (try a water-based non-glycerine or silicone lube). There’s a lot of sex information lacking in our education system, so it’s no surprise that many people turn to porn as a default source for sex ed. Director Chi Chi LaRue spent a good 20 years in the gay porn business fighting for visibility of condoms and the safer sex consideration of porn performers. Showing safe sex as an example of how to have good sex is particularly important.

Ultimately what it boils down to for me is my belief that all performers should be able to have sex as they feel safest. Whether that means testing, barriers, a combination, or whatever they’ve consented to. I don’t think safer sex barriers should be REQUIRED, nor do I agree that performers should feel pressured not to use them. Production companies can provide as much resources, safer sex supplies, or testing reimbursement as they can afford, and allow porn performers the freedom to choose what they feel most comfortable with. The top three examples of companies and directors I have worked with so far who provide additional safer sex supplies to help models feel safer are: Pink & White Productions (Directed by Shine Louise Houston), Kink.com (on set with Princess Donna), and Vivid-Ed (on numerous sets with Tristan Taormino, whose performer-conscious work was recently featured in CNN posted “Prevent STDs like a Porn Star“). Thanks in part to an increasing diversity of progressive pornography, our culture is becoming more and more educated and sex-positive. Let’s continue to support each other in the adult industry, and also learning more — as I am — about how to be the safest we can be.

UPDATES:

I followed along via Twitter as Ela Darling, Michael Fattorosi, and others shared agenda topics and reactions of those present online. This morning I’m reading articles as they are published, which I’m including here.

If you’re curious, here is the draft created from the meeting.
Feedback on it can be sent to Deborah Gold at DGold@dir.ca.gov

I appreciated what looks like a really thorough AVN article by Mark Kernes (Industry Expresses Its Feelings—Loudly—at Cal/OSHA Meeting) and Danny Wylde’s Abbreviated Account of the June 7th Cal-OSHA Advisory Committee Meeting. Here’s his conclusion.

“There are many more points to cover. But this is an abbreviated version, so I’m going to end here:

As it stands, nothing has actually changed except for that fact that we are now very much aware that Cal-OSHA considers our industry practices to be illegal, and AHF is very insistent in making sure we are penalized until we change those practices.

The problem is that those practices are the basis for our livelihood and they have gone unchallenged for years.

Further, performers in attendance were in near unanimous agreement that our testing practices under AIM healthcare were sufficient and effective, and we do not want mandated barrier protection in our industry.”

My sense is that the experiences I’ve had with progressive producers who work within the industry’s current testing standards and who have been open and encouraging around performers’ individual sexual health needs is essentially what the rest of the adult industry wants. I’m curious to see how “adult entertainment” is defined in terms of creating definitions for pornography (which may relate to free speech concerns). It seems like the debate is primarily concerned with heterosexual/straight sex — particularly at one point when “they Gay Industry” was brought up, as if it were outside the conversation (perhaps because condoms are the standard in this genre). It will be interesting to see how regulations effect things, and it was exciting to see performers speak up about their rights; even from another city in San Francisco.

UPDATE 1/18/2012
Well, it’s passed — so in about 90 days LA production companies (at least, those who get permits) will have to use condoms for heterosexual scenes. It doesn’t really effect me much at all, though it does the people I know who work down there in those types of scenes. Here are some other updates in the meantime:
Lorelei Lee wrote a great piece about this in Salon. LA’s Porn Mistake
I was interviewed for an article in CounterPunch’s “The Condom: Friend or Foe in the Adult Film Industry”.

UPDATE 10/17/2012
Measure B is now up to votes in LA. There’s a lot of support from pornographers for NO on Measure B. Though I don’t live in Los Angeles, I side with those voting AGAINST Measure B so that it continues to be performers’ choice. However I’m also seeing some “backlash” from performers that is pretty sex-shaming about using barriers. I’d like to remind people that many of us enjoy using latex and non-latex barriers in sex scenes and in off-screen sex, and while it’s probably not their intention to do so, making fun of gloves and dental dams can put others down, and does discourage their use. Once again, I’m for performers’ choice, be it barriers testing, basing risks of sex acts, or any combination. Here’s a new blog post on the subject: Safer Sex CAN Be Hot!

UPDATE 5/14/2014
Measure B passed, but porn didn’t start using condoms. Instead, Los Angeles companies stopped getting permits. Others relocated to Nevada. (And coincidentally, around the same time it became very apparent that a company called Manwin (which then changed their name to MindGeek) started buying up companies left and right. Either there’s something fishy going on or I’ve been watching too many government conspiracy shows.) Anyhow, the “condom mandate” didn’t just stop in LA. Assemblyman Isadore Hall brought a version of the bill to Sacramento for a statewide vote as AB 1576, however, it removed specific language, not even mentioning the word “condom” which makes the bill very dangerous because it’s so vague that it could potentially be used to criminalize any form of porn. Even movies by queer, feminist, safer-sex loving indie porn peeps. Pink & White Productions has posted an open letter. (Full disclosure: I now work for the San Francisco-based queer porn company, and we’re considering the logistics of moving to Nevada.)

It’s heartbreaking to see the bill pass the CA Arts & Entertainment Committee despite producers and performers in attendance, such as Princess Donna and Lorelei Lee, who stood and advocated for their rights. As it stands, I’m concerned about the future of shooting porn in the Bay Area. Re-reading this post before I made this update, I realize I had written about how it “doesn’t really effect me much at all” as someone who prefers barriers. But now with the vague language of the new bill, the chance is high that it could be manipulated to criminalize whoever the state chooses to make an example of. In this case, the smallest companies have the most to loose. I’m beginning to see the size of this unfold, and am uncertain about what lies ahead. Until then, we do what we can and will prepare for the worst. Pink & White is a company that has grown from its silver linings, so I’ll raise my half-full cup and keep my eyes open.

UPDATE 5/19/2014
On Wednesday 21st there will be an Assembly Appropriations hearing in Sacramento. I will try to make the trip up there to lend my voice in opposition to AB1576.
Groups opposing it include the Adult Performers Advocacy Committee, the Erotic Service Providers Union, and the Free Speech Coalition which has gathered a petition of performers names to be presented at the hearing.

In the meantime, the website ab1576.org has a form that allows people to FAX (Online! So easy.) their letters to California State Assembly Members. Let’s show our strength in numbers and flood them with our feels. Though the site also has petitions, the biggest thing to do right now is to send the letters, and share the news with others to do the same. Together, we can be a loud enough voice where they’ll have no choice but to listen.

UPDATE 5/31/2014
The bill passed the Assembly Floor by a very narrow margin, and so it’s on to the Senate Committee in a few weeks. We’ve gotten some press about the issue, including a spot on Fox News, though most of it reports false information from Hall and AFH. For example, here’s news from the LA Department of Public Health which confirms Hall provided false information. More to come… (in the meantime, if you’re a performer who lives in the district of the following Senators (or if you’re a member of the press who would like to write on the subject) please contact Diane Duke of the Free Speech Coalition.)
